Traditional home room design

Not all millennials are chasing high-tech minimalism and TikTok trends. There is a humble niche of young adults who were raised on good old-fashioned beige sofas and landscape paintings – such is the way of typically traditional home design.

Sure, they’ve done away with the animal furs and the open wood fireplaces, but the essence of traditionalism remains.

If you fall into this niche, welcome. This is a safe space where a love of history, etiquette and simplicity come together in a home that makes you feel all warm inside.

With our expert advice, this blog should put to rest all the concerns you have about creating the perfect traditional home. Room design, styling, floorplans and much more will be taken care of by our team while you add those special touches that make it your own. So, without further ado, let’s discuss traditional home design!

How Traditional Is Traditional

We get it: the term is a little vague. So, allow us to clear things up. Traditional design was popularised in the post-war era of the mid-1900s, as homemakers splashed their newfound cash on elements that reflected lavish centuries passed.

This means that your traditional home is actually inspired by the regal relics of 18th and 19th century western Europe. If names like Catherine the Great, George Washington, and Mozart were all designing their homes today, you can be sure they’d opt for the traditional style of their times.

If this excites you, then great! Fill your home to your heart’s content with the traditional elements described below.

If you’re a little put off by the wigs and chandeliers of the day, and only want a taste of the traditional, never fear. There are all kinds of ways to incorporate traditional design into your home without it feeling over the top.

Elements of Traditional Design

Assuming you don’t want paintings of your great-grandmother and dust adorning your decorative deer’s head, here’s a few more low-key elements to consider:

Warm, calming, neutral tones are a staple of this style. Creamy walls and timber flooring are just the canvas you need to set a relaxed tone for your traditional living room.

Darker timber tones are another subtle part of traditional design which can be incorporated into all kinds of homes. This includes every from floorboards to furniture and cabinetry.

Furniture with feeling is essential to add character to your period of pride. While some people might see the “olden days” as boring and dull, traditional furniture is anything but straight and narrow. It has frills and flavour that expresses expert carpentry of great value then and now.

Get ornamental with your new home as you embrace all the knick-knacks that epitomise traditional design. Of course, this style relishes functionality, but that doesn’t mean that aesthetics should be ignored. Head to your local op-shop or antique store to find some of the quirkiest decorations you can find. Funky tablecloths, vintage China, crystal glassware and so much more can be used to express yourself while giving character to any room.

Childproofing Traditional

If you’re a young parent, you may be thinking what we’re thinking – this all sounds very fragile and not so child-friendly.

You may be right but there are still ways to design a traditionally styled family home. For starters, many pieces of traditional furniture lend themselves to curvy edges which are a little safer for clumsy kids.

If you want to keep your fragile China and vases away from curious hands, traditional design often incorporates beautiful timber display cabinets where they’ll stay safe while still being on show.

If you’re worried about your beautiful, antique sofa getting ruined by red cordial, well…that may be a job for a secure sippy cup – not everything traditional is purely child-proof!
